DC: Starting with Superman's Powers - Chapter 3
The black sedan sped down the country road, occasionally passing ambulances and fire trucks.
The town, ravaged by meteorites, was scarred and devastated. For the town, today was destined to be a catastrophic day. Jino sat in the back of the sedan, looking out the window, he could see many families driving away from the town.
The sedan passed the field where Jino had been earlier, the towering cornfield flattened by the impact of the meteorite explosion.
Even with the town in chaos, it couldn’t deter Lionel’s money-making ambition.
“Seriously, why aren’t we staying at the hospital, but instead following this vampire around?” Lex complained to Jino, having displayed filial piety since childhood.
Just a few minutes earlier, when Lionel mentioned the Kents’ names, Jino insisted on going with them.
“Oh, come on, that expensive suit you’re wearing, he bought it for you,” Jino said, pointing at Lex’s suit, which made him sulk again, his face drawn long.
“Boss, we’re here,” the driver said, pulling the car smoothly to a stop. Looking out the window, it was a slightly old farm.
“Who would live in a place like this?” Lex remarked disdainfully, looking at the crumbling farm.
“That’s why I tell you to work hard,” Lionel sneered, opening the door and stepping out.
Jino silently pushed open his door and followed him out of the car.
“Oh, my God, I stepped in poop!”
As soon as he got out, Lex unluckily stepped in a pile of bird droppings at the edge of the road.
Jino walked past Lex, mockingly saying with a smile, “Lucky as ever, Lex.”
He turned his attention to the farm.
The entrance gate was chained, suggesting the owners weren’t home.
“We came all this way for nothing! This is a waste of my time,” the shrewd businessman Lionel was annoyed. Smelling the bird droppings in the air, he couldn’t help but turn to scold Lex, “Damn it, Lex, throw those shoes away! Stop wiping them everywhere!”
Lex awkwardly took off his shoes and threw them into the field. Being scolded by his father in front of Jino made Lex lose even more face, and he stomped back to the car with a dark expression.
“Father, I think we’ve found the family,” Jino hinted, standing on his tiptoes and pointing at two figures in the distance.
They were a young couple. The man’s face was filled with a simple, honest expression, making him easily recognizable as a trustworthy person in a crowd, giving off a steady and reliable feeling.
His wife seemed to be saying something to him, and the man smiled and nodded, but his worried eyes showed that he wasn’t feeling well.
As for his wife, she had beautiful blonde hair. Her arms were tightly wrapped around the coat she held to her chest; it seemed to hide something, making her frequently glance down at it.
“Thank goodness, they’re finally here,” Lionel let out a long sigh of relief and strode towards the couple.
He blocked their path, pulling out an account book from his pocket and saying, “Hey, you two, I’m Lionel Luthor, CEO of LuthorCorp.”
Lionel waved a wad of cash at Jonathan, saying, “Let’s get straight to the point. How much do you want? I’ll give you an offer you can’t refuse to buy this farm.”
“Wait, Martha and I—” Jonathan’s words were cut off as Lionel pulled him aside to discuss the price. In Lionel’s view, there was nothing money couldn’t buy.
Martha, the young wife, looked worriedly at Lionel negotiating with her husband. In her eyes, LuthorCorp was a giant they couldn’t afford to offend, and given her husband’s stubborn personality, he was very likely to clash with Lionel.
As Martha worried, she felt a gentle tug on her pant leg. She looked down to see a delicate, jade-like little boy looking up at her with clear, bright eyes.
“Beautiful elder sister, what are you holding in your arms?” The cunning Jino fully utilized his adorable appearance and eloquent speech to ask Martha.
Looking at the cute boy, Martha glanced down at the baby she had found by the roadside, smiled, and said, “He’s my adopted child.”
“A baby?” Jino’s eyes lit up with eagerness. “Can I see him?”
“This—” Martha wanted to refuse, but meeting Jino’s pitiful expression, she sighed, squatted down, and showed the swaddled baby to Jino.
“He’s so cute.” Jino stared at the baby wrapped in the coat, with short black hair and a peaceful sleeping face. The baby’s fair skin further awakened a woman’s maternal instincts, no wonder Martha insisted on keeping the young Clark.
“Can I touch his hair?”
Martha pursed her lips. “Alright, but be gentle, he’s sleeping.”
“Of course.” Jino nodded solemnly, pointing to the black sedan behind him. “I often lull my younger brother to sleep too, I have experience with this.”
Martha looked up at Lex, who was in the car with a dark expression, unaware he’d just been called a younger brother. Only then did she feel relieved and hand the swaddled baby to Jino.
Jino stared at Clark, then extended two fingers. In a view unseen by others, a golden glowing card was sandwiched between his two fingers.
His fingers slowly reached towards Clark. The moment his index finger touched Clark’s forehead, the golden card transformed into golden dust, sprinkling over the young Clark’s body.
Contacted Clark Kent, talent copied.
The System’s cold voice resonated in his mind.
Jino felt a little confused. To be honest, he didn’t feel anything strange; it was as calm and unchanging as breathing.
Except for the sunset hitting his body, giving him an indescribable comfort…
“Is this System fake?” Jino’s expression was odd. He wondered if the System had a complaint channel; he wanted to complain about the System!
As Jino pondered, Jonathan and Lionel, not far away, also got into a heated argument.
“I’m sorry, Lionel, no matter how much money, I won’t sell my farm. I love it here; it’s an indispensable part of me!”
Lionel turned away angrily. “Suit yourself, you stubborn idiot!”
“Jino, let’s go!”
Jino glanced at his exasperated father, offered Martha an apologetic smile, and then turned to leave with Lionel.
Sitting in the car, Lionel was clearly furious, complaining incessantly about Jonathan’s stubbornness and foolishness the entire way.
Jino was also a little unhappy. Feeling the small knife in his pocket, he wasn’t sure if he had truly gained Superman’s abilities. If it had really worked, why was there no change?
Jino subconsciously clenched his fist.
Crack.
A crisp sound came from his pocket. Jino looked down into his pocket and saw that the sharp fruit knife in his palm had twisted into a useless piece of scrap metal.
